Commercial Yacht Registration

Commercial Yacht Registration

As with private/pleasure yacht registration, the following applies.

Any citizen of Malta or of the European Union (EU) and any company registered in Malta or in an EU Member State may register a yacht under the Malta flag. However, unless residing in Malta, an EU citizen must appoint a local agent in Malta to handle matters.

A non-EU citizen cannot procure the registration of a yacht in Malta directly. However, any such non-EU citizen would be entitled to set up a company in Malta to hold and register the relevant yacht under the Malta flag.

Similarly to EU citizens living out of Malta, the Non-EU registered must point a local representative and undergo an assessment by the registrar-general to assess their legal credibility in their home country.

Vessels may also be registered in Malta whilst they are still being built or equipped and pending their completion. Maltese law provides protection for both financiers and vessel owners and the mortgage system is straightforward.

Yachts intended for international commercial use would additionally be required to comply with standards set by the domestic Commercial Yacht Code.
