Bareboat Charter Registration

Maltese legislation allows for bareboat charter registration.

Two scenarios of this type of Maltese vessel registration are allowed by Maltese law:

  • Bareboat charter registration of foreign ships under the Maltese flag;
  • Bareboat charter registration of Malta ships under a foreign flag.

The maximum period for such type of registration is two years. This can be extended for additional periods of two years each, should the parties involved agree to do so. The registration procedure does not differ much from normal registration of a vessel.

A vessel which is registered as a bareboat charter needs to conform to the same obligations and also benefit from the same rights and privileges accorded to vessels registered under the Malta flag.

Prior to registering a maritime vessel as a bareboat charter under a foreign flag, one must obtain the consent of the Maltese Maritime Authority.

This consent is issued upon the review of a documentation checklist, from the consent of mortgagees to evidence of compatibility of foreign registry, if applicable.

The key criterion for any of the two types of bareboat charter registration to take place is the compatibility of the foreign ship registry with the Maltese ship registry. Amongst other foreign compatible registries there are: Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Estonia, France, Gibraltar, Liberia, Marshall Islands, Panama, Russia Federation, Singapore, Turkey and Ukraine.
